Police Legitimacy among Minority and Majority Communities: Views of Arabs and Jews in Israel

Dr Badi Hasisi

Studies on the perception of minorities toward police legitimacy indicated that procedural
justice play a major role in predicting police legitimacy, similar to the perceptions of the
majority group. However, these studies were conducted in western countries where
minority and the majority share the same social sphere (mixed cities), while our knowledge
is very limited when alternative majority-minority relationship is considered. Furthermore,
the study also explores the role of perceptions of discrimination and its effect on police
legitimacy, especially among minorities.
Dr Hasisi serves as a Chair of the Institute of Criminology, The Hebrew University. His
main research focuses on Policing Divided Societies and Police-Minority relations; and his
research has been published in leading journals such as Law and Society Review,
Criminal Justice and Behavior, American Law and Economic Review, Criminal Law and
Criminology and the British Journal of Criminology. Dr Hasisi is also the executive editor
of the Journal of Quantitative Criminology.
