Samson's Locks: Modern Transformations of Biblical Samson

Prof. David Fishelov

The Lecture will present an analysis of several 19th and 20th century transformations of the figure of Samson in Western and Hebrew Literature and culture, from an opera by Saint-Saëns to a novel by Jabotinsky, and a Hollywood movie.

David Fishelov is professor of comparative literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was a visiting professor at UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, Columbia University and the EHESS in Paris. Among his books are: Metaphors of Genre: The Role of Analogies in Genre Theory (1993); Like a Rainfall: Studies on Poetic Similes (1996), Dialogues with/and Great Books: The Dynamics of Canon Formation (2010).
