Discarded History: The Genizah of Medieval Cairo
to mark the opening by Dr Leonard Polonsky CBE, Chairman, The Polonsky Foundation
For more than 1000 years the Jews of Fustat, Old Cairo, faithfully preserved their worn-out sacred texts, shopping lists, personal letters, business documents and records of daily life in their 'Genizah'. This colossal haul of writings shows an intimate portrait of a vibrant community—international in outlook, multicultural in make up, and devout to its core.
